The Tennessee Education Association (TEA) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Staff Attorney. Responsibilities of this position will include providing legal representation to members, responding to TEA’s Advocacy Hotline inquiries, and providing legal guidance to TEA’s local affiliates participating in collaborative conferencing. The position will represent clients throughout Tennessee and will need to reside in Tennessee and have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Basic Qualifications and Personal Characteristics for Position:
- A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and currently licensed to practice law in Tennessee or obtain a Tennessee license within six months of beginning employment.
- Proficient at legal research and writing
- The ability and desire to work and thrive as part of a team
- A belief in public education and the role it plays in society
- Strong leadership skills and personal characteristics with the ability to prioritize work, complete tasks in a timely manner, and think creatively
- Effective listening and oral communication skills
- Embody personal attributes that include being proactive, empathetic, passionate, and articulate.
- Excellent time management skills
- Proficient in using software tools to track, manage, and analyze data
Other Desired Qualifications:
- Civil litigation experience
- Experience/skill in building effective relationships
- Experience working for a non-profit
- Experience with or an understanding of labor law and/or education law
- Interest/understanding of current education reform issues
- Experience in organizing around labor relations and/or collective bargaining issues
- The ability to analyze an operating budget
- Experience with either private or public sector bargaining
- The ability and desire to train others.
Benefits and Compensation
The starting salary range for the position will be between $63,079.87 and $84,999.61 annually (dependent upon experience and qualifications). Excellent fringe benefits including family health insurance; dental; vision and life insurance; 401k; and a retirement and leave package.
