Self-Care Tips for Educators

Self-Care Tips for Educators

1. Protect Your Energy with Boundaries

This time of year can feel especially demanding, so give yourself permission to set gentle limits. Whether it’s saying no to an extra task, carving out a quiet moment before or after school, or stepping back from email in the evenings, boundaries help you recharge and show up as your best self. Check with your Association Representative or UniServ Coordinator what rights and protections you have within your contract and/or under Tennessee law.

2. Make Time for Small Daily Joys

Shorter days and busy schedules can dull your sense of balance. Build in small rituals that lift your mood: a warm drink, an outdoor walk, soft music during planning time, or a few minutes of reading something you enjoy. Tiny moments of joy add up and can help combat seasonal heaviness.

3. Watch for Signs of Seasonal Depression

Colder, darker months can affect energy, mood, and motivation. If you notice changes like persistent sadness, increased fatigue, inconsistent sleep, or withdrawing from what you normally enjoy, it’s important to reach out to a trusted colleague, family member, or mental health professional. TEA offers free and 100% confidential counseling services to members, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 615.651.0676.

4. Lean on Your Community

You don’t have to carry everything alone. Connect with colleagues who understand the unique challenges of this season to share resources, swap classroom ideas, or simply check in on one another. Even brief moments of connection can lighten the emotional load.
